Plants are organisms known as producers or autotrophs. They are able to produce their own food by means of photosynthesis. The only things that they need are carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight. This is also why they have the highest amount of energy in the energy pyramid. They also serve as the bottom of the biomass, which means that they are the organisms that have the highest biomass of all. Plants serve as food for primary consumers which are then eaten by secondary consumers and so on as the energy pyramid rises. If plants were to be wiped out on the surface of the earth, it would surely be a massive blow to the population of many organisms.

Plants also produce oxygen as a product of photosynthesis. Most of the organisms on Earth utilize oxygen for their cellular processes which keep them alive. If oxygen levels are depleted because of the absence or lack of plants, many organisms, including humans. Plants also cool down the planet by removing excessive carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a well-known greenhouse gas, if its concentration will be reduced, then the greenhouse effect will be lessened.
